BACKBENDING WORKSHOP with STEVE JACOBSON

Come and explore the ins and outs of backbends with our favorite backbender. Steve will take you from the beginning warm up sequence of how to prepare for backbends into the satisfaction of the completed poses and
through a cool down and recovery period. Come and explore how to get into the backbends you never thought you could do.

REQUIREMENTS: A sense of adventure, curiosity and a minimum of 1 year's experience. Must be able to get up unassisted in Urdhva Dhanurasana and be willing to try the more advanced poses. This seminar is designed for those who are interested in learning how to approach the more advanced backbends.

Cost for this workshop is $35

Steve Jacobson is a certified Iyengar teacher who combines practicing and teaching yoga with a career as a philosophy professor. Steve has studied Iyengar Yoga since 1984, and has spent well over a year at the Iyengar Institute in India in regular visits dating back to 1988. He also has an extensive background in Aikido. His classes are filled with compassion, humor and a sense of exploration.

 
WORKSHOP with VISITING TEACHER ROGER COLE: ANATOMY AND YOGA Oct. 1-3

Roger Cole, PhD. is an internationally recognized Iyengar yoga teacher and accomplished research scientist. He studied yoga at the Iyengar Yoga Institutes in San Francisco and Pune, India. He studied anatomy, physiology and psychology at Stanford University and the University of California Sand Francisco Medical School. He has practiced yoga since 1975 and taught since 1980. He has been featured in five of Yoga Journal's asana calendars and authored many articles on yoga anatomy, biology and therapeutics (for examples, see yogajournal.com). Roger currently teaches at Yoga del Mar near San Diego, California, and conducts workshops and teacher training throughout the U.S. and abroad.

SHOULDERS: ANATOMY AND PRACTICE (3 hours)
This class will teach you simple, effective ways to maximize shoulder mobility, strength and comfort. Learn how to use shoulder anatomy to progress step-by-step from simple movements to complete yoga asanas to a posture sequence that systematically works every part of the shoulder joint.
BACKBENDS: ANATOMY AND PRACTICE (2.5 hours)

Improve and deepen your backbends by understanding the anatomy of the hips, spine, trunk and shoulders, and applying it to a thorough backbends practice.

RELAXATION: PHYSIOLOGY AND PRACTICE (3 hours)
The ancient yogis developed ingenious ways to produce profound relaxation by triggering reflexes that we are all born with. Learn the physiology that makes restorative yoga postures so remarkably effective, then put it to use in a long, deep relaxation practice. If possible, please bring extra yoga blankets and a small towel or other item to cover the eyes.

HIPS AND KNEES: ANATOMY AND PRACTICE (3 hours)

Learn a powerful sequence of yoga postures to safely mobilize, align and strengthen the knees and hips. The class will combine clear anatomical explanations with thorough practice.
BACK AND TRUNK: ANATOMY AND PRACTICE (2.5 hours)
This class will teach how to get your back and trunk strong, flexible and well-aligned. You will learn the anatomy of this region, and how to apply it in yoga postures to: --prevent injury --work with back problems --deepen your back bends, forward bends, side bends, and twists.

2010 TEACHER TRAINING AND ASSESSMENT PREPARATION Kathleen Pringle (Nancy Mau host contact and Teacher Asst.)
This program has been divided into four sessions:
March 19-20 Basic Standing and Seated Poses (chanting) PYS Pada II
April 16-17 Standing, Seated, Supine and Inverted Twists PYS I, II
June 18-19 Supine, Prone, Supported and Unsupported Backbends PYS II, III
August 20-21 Seated Forward Bends, Inversions and Abdominal Poses PYS III, IV
 
The schedule for each session is as follows:
FRIDAY 5:30 pm - 8:30 pm Demonstrated Practice and feedback
SATURDAY 9:00 am - 10:25 pm Nancy’s Level 2 class) observe or participate
  10:30 am - 12:00 pm (Anna’s Level 1 class) observe or participate
  12:30 pm - 1:15 pm Chanting the Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras (PYS) DVD’s
  1:15 pm - 1:30 pm BREAK
  1:30 pm - 6:00pm Teaching, Observing and Discussion of Program
The Friday night class is intended to give feedback on your practice of the poses on your syllabus. The Saturday morning session is an opportunity to participate in and/or observe a class: the teacher’s sequence, the linking of the poses, the teacher’s instructions and the teacher’s observation, corrections and/or modifications – will all be discussed and critiqued during the teacher training. You may, but are not required to, participate in or observe one or both classes – included in the cost of the program. From 12:30p.m. – 1:15p.m., we will chant one or two of the four books or “padas” of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras along with Geeta or one of her students.

You will have time to eat between the morning class and the 12:30 p.m. chanting of the Sutras. There will also be a 15 minute break between chanting and the 1:30 – 6:00 session. This will allow adequate time to nourish and rejuvenate before the 1:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. session. Please be prepared by referring to the material that follows.

In advance of the first teacher training session, please have the following materials:

3. Yoga, A Gem for Women Geeta Iyengar
4. Light on theYoga Sutras of Patanjali or other book on Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras
5. Yoga in Action Preliminary Course B.K.S. and Geeta Iyengar
6. Basic Guidelines for Teachers of Yoga B.K.S. and Geeta Iyengar (Available only to those who have applied for assessment this year.)

Students certified at Introductory level should have in addition:
1. The 2010 Certification Manual and have paid all dues and signed the certification mark agreement by January 2009.
2. Light on Pranayama B.K.S. Iyengar
3. Light on Life B.K.S. Iyengar
4. The Bhagavad Gita – there are a number of versions, check the certification manual or choose a favorite.
5. The Hatha Yoga Pradipika – there are recommendations in the certification manual.

All 4 sessions $500
Individual sessions $160 each

You may purchase certification manual through IYNAUS. You must be a member of IYNAUS or a regional association in 2009 if you want to be eligible for assessment in 2009.
